How Rechargeable Wellbeing Came About
I grew up a Devon girl with the salty sea air on my skin and the sand between my toes. Most of my days were spent outdoors swimming, sailing, kayaking, cycling and hiking with my family. I had no idea this was exercise. I just saw it as play time!
My parents had a very relaxed approach to our upbringing but good nutrition was a non-negotiable. I thank them for those positive habits today. I did however rebel as a teenager and was drawn to all the usual junk food, fizzy drinks and fad diets. I also stopped joining my parents on country walks and at the beach and did a lot of sitting around instead.
Not only did I pile on excess weight but it affected my mood, energy and general confidence. I felt horrible and very self conscious of my wibbly physique! I realised I’d lost my way. I’d forgotten how to eat a nourishing diet and I could barely run for ten minutes without getting out of breath. I slowly pounded the pavements and started buying health magazines and books to begin re-educating myself again.

The buzz of revived wellbeing felt really empowering. I felt like I’d got my mojo back…I loved this active lifestyle so much that when I moved to London to go to university I got a weekend job at a gym. Cycling to work across the city felt very liberating (although also hair raising at times in traffic and not that healthy breathing in all the traffic fumes).
As I went about my journeys and passed office windows and living rooms, I noticed how sedentary the average city lifestyle was with people sitting in traffic from dawn, slumped at desks all day and then reclined on the sofa in the evenings.
I also noticed the stress so many people were carrying in their mechanical postures, the collective brain fog the busyness had caused and the irritability as people barged past each other in the faceless hustle and bustle. I longed for headspace, actual green space and joyful movement!
